To add comments you must be logged in and have a confirmed email for your account.

Why?

Ownership:
Your user name is unique on this site, and is used to sign your comments. This guarantees nobody else can add a comment under your name.
Editing:
You may edit or delete your comment until someone responds to it. After that it is frozen so that the conversation thread is preserved.
Notification:
You may elect to be notified when someone responds to one of your comments. The notification is sent to your confirmed email address.
Politeness:
People are more polite and courteous if they "own" their comments.

You may change your user name stored in your profile. If you do this the signature in your comments changes to match your new user name, even for old comments.

If you delete your account your comments will remain, but will be signed with a generated name not associated with your user name.

Commenters that are not polite and courteous may be blocked.
